We have 25 hand painted 'spot' illustrations in Don't Break My Rice Bowl. All have been created by @justine.rykiel, Robert Dodd's illustrator and animator granddaughter.

Think of them as clues to what's ahead, or a way to highlight something symbolic.

The pocket watch is the Prologue: The Jog's illustration. It symbolises time passing, life potentially slipping by as well as the wisdom gained with age.

“The colonel glared. ‘Where the hell did you get that shirt? Do you wear that sort of thing to the field?’

‘A Christmas present, and of course I wear it to the field. The Vietnamese farmers love it. The women often come up to me to touch it when I’m in a village. This is nothing, you should see…’

‘Good God, it looks awful! Sloppy, Eddie, sloppy,’ the colonel said in disgust, shaking his head slowly.

‘Oh, I don’t know. It’s colourful and comfortable and makes it pretty obvious to anyone who sees me that I’m a civilian. You never know, the VC might take a shot at someone in uniform but not a guy poking around in a flowery Hawaiian shirt.”
